College Dorm Storage Hacks: Transform the Space Under Your Bed

Dorm Bed Storage Height β€” How Much Space Do You Really Have?

Before planning your under-bed storage, it’s important to know how much clearance your dorm bed actually has. The key measurement is the height of the horizontal bed rail where your mattress rests β€” this determines the open space beneath the bed.

Start by checking your dorm’s housing website for details. Many schools list whether beds are adjustable, along with the maximum height and floor-to-rail measurements. If the information isn’t available, contact housing or look for room tours from previous students to confirm.

If your bed isn’t adjustable, check whether risers are allowed and if the school lists the standard mattress height from the floor. Adjustable dorm beds raised to their highest level usually offer about 27″–33β€³ of clearance beneath the frame β€” but always verify exact measurements with your campus.

Using bed risers? Just add the riser height to your bed’s existing clearance. For example, if your Twin XL bed has 30β€³ of clearance, you’re working with roughly 53 cubic feet of storage space underneath β€” perfect for bins, drawers, or a rolling organizer!

What Does Your College Provide for a Dresser?

Before you start buying extra storage, check what your college already provides. Most dorms include a dresser β€” but the size and style can vary a lot!

  •  First step: look on your school’s housing website. They usually list furniture dimensions or show example dorm layouts.
Not all dorms have shorter dressers that slide under raised beds (like the one in the pic above).
  • Typical sizes:
Dorm dressers meant for under-bed storage are usually around 24″–36β€³ wide, 18″–24β€³ deep, and up to 30β€³ high.
But always double-check with your housing office, since each campus can be a little different.

And remember β€” just because your dresser fits under the bed doesn’t mean it has to go there!

  • Try moving it into an open closet for a built-in look.
  •  Stack two dressers to create a storage console (only if they’re stable and safe).
  •  Or leave the space open for bins, rolling drawers, or shoe organizers.

Your dorm dresser is basically a blank canvas β€” make it work for your layout and aesthetic!
